Your website might look great. Good design, good copy, clear calls to action. But if it is slow or frustrating to use, none of that matters.
Performance problems kill conversions. And the difficult part is that most of them are invisible to the people running the site because you are used to how it loads. Your visitors are not.
Here are the five performance mistakes that consistently hurt conversions and what you can do about each one.
Mistake 1: You Have Never Measured Your Speed
This is the most common mistake of all. Most website owners have never actually tested how fast their site loads for a real visitor on a real mobile connection.
Go to Google PageSpeed Insights and run your URL through it right now. Look at your mobile score specifically. If it is below 70 you have a problem worth fixing. If it is below 50 you have an urgent problem.
Do this before anything else. You cannot fix what you have not measured.
Mistake 2: Your Images Are Not Optimised
Images are almost always the biggest cause of slow page load times. And on most websites that have never been deliberately optimised, the images are enormous.
A photo uploaded straight from a camera can easily be 8 to 10 megabytes. That is what your visitors are downloading every time they load your page.
Compress your images before uploading. Convert them to WebP format, which looks just as good but takes up far less space. Enable lazy loading so images below the fold only load when a visitor actually scrolls down to see them.
Plugins like ShortPixel and Imagify handle all of this automatically.
Mistake 3: You Have No Caching
Every page load without caching means your server builds the page from scratch. Every single time. It queries the database, runs the code and assembles everything before showing your visitor anything.
Caching saves a pre-built version of the page and serves it instantly. It is one of the highest-impact changes you can make.
If you are on WordPress install WP Rocket or LiteSpeed Cache. Set up Cloudflare too. The free Cloudflare plan gives you a CDN that serves your site from locations closer to your visitors, which cuts load time significantly.
Mistake 4: Your Hosting Cannot Handle Real Traffic
This is the one nobody wants to hear because fixing it costs money.
Cheap shared hosting puts your site on a server with hundreds of other websites. When another site gets busy yours slows down. You have no control over it.
If your site is generating revenue or converting visitors into leads you should not be on cheap shared hosting. The performance improvement after switching to proper managed hosting is immediate and significant.
Mistake 5: Too Many Third-Party Scripts
Every tool you add that loads from an external server adds load time. Live chat widgets. Marketing pixels. Analytics scripts. Pop-up tools. Each one makes a separate request to an outside server and each one slows your page down.
Open your browser developer tools and go to the Network tab. Reload your page and look at how many requests are going out to external domains. You will often find five or six different external services loading on every page.
Audit every third-party script. Remove anything you do not actively use. For the ones you need, make sure they load asynchronously so they do not block your page from rendering.
Performance Is Part of Your Conversion Strategy
Most businesses think about conversions in terms of headlines, button colours and landing page copy. Those things matter. But a site that loads in 1.5 seconds will outperform a visually identical site that loads in 4 seconds every single time.
Speed is a feature. Start treating it like one.
